I was at a screening of “Straw Dogs” earlier tonight (look for my review online and in the paper Friday), before which we were shown eight minutes of David Fincher’s American remake of the Swedish “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” movie. It looks like it’s going to be good. The eight-minute presentation wasn’t as stylish as the trailer is — it doesn’t have that Led Zeppelin cover by Karen O, for one thing, but has what I assume is Trent Reznor’s orchestral score, instead. And I don’t get why everyone is speaking Swedish-accented English except Craig, who’s speaking English-accented English despite being named Mikael Blomkvist. But it does a nice job of laying out the mystery Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara are trying to solve and it introduces us to their characters (in case you are the only person who didn’t read the books, he’s a disgraced reporter and she’s an antisocial computer hacker). Three more months and we’ll all get to see the other 112 minutes or so!
