Daniel Craig Is No Meryl Streep

Almost none of the actors in the new, English-language version of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” are Swedish, but almost all of them are playing Swedes and almost all of them bother to do an accent that seems at least vaguely Swedish (the exception is Brit Joely Richardson, whose character has lived in England for decades). That’s not true of Daniel Craig, whose character, Mikael Blomkvist, is clearly Swedish but Craig uses his regular English accent, even though he’s surrounded by (Canadian) Christopher Plummer, (American) Rooney Mara, (English) Geraldine James and (Dutch) Yorick van Wageningen doing Swedish accents. Craig has said he thought a Swedish accent would have gotten in the way, which seems like a very peculiar argument, especially now that his lack of accent is a topic of discussion. Maybe the actor, whose American accent is shaky in “Cowboys and Aliens,” just isn’t good at dialects? If that’s the case, he’s in good company: Judi Dench is an acting legend whose accents are awful (check out “J Edgar” or, actually, don’t) and Robert Redford and Kevin Costner are both famous for not doing English accents when they played Englishmen in “Out of Africa”  and “Robin Hood,” respectively.
